What is a Flowhead Assembly?

A flowhead assembly, also known as a surface test tree, is an essential piece of equipment in well testing. It typically consists of four gate valves: a master valve, two wing valves, and a swab valve. The outlet wing valve is controlled by a hydraulic actuator, while a lifting subassembly (sub) with a threaded connection (quick union) is located above the swab valve. This quick union connects auxiliary pressure equipment, making the setup versatile and efficient.

Some flowheads feature a protective frame bolted to the main block to shield the valves during handling. Beneath the optional swivel are the master valve assembly and the bottom sub. Elevators (clamps) are attached to the flowhead for raising and lowering the DST string.
